How Your Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Works
A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) allows you to save money for eligible health care expenses throughout the year. You can then withdraw money as reimbursement for any expenses you've paid out-of-pocket. The money set aside in an FSA is actually worth more because it's tax-free. As a participant, you pay no taxes on the contributions or the withdrawals, which provides a significant tax savings.
Use your FSA dollars for the following:
Health care expenses not covered by your health plan
Copays
Coinsurance
Deductibles
Over-the-counter medicine and drugs*
Durable Medical costs
Pharmacy costs
Orthodontic costs
Vision costs
*As of January 1, 2011, you will need a doctor's prescription for over-the-counter (OTC) drugs (with the exception of insulin) to be eligible for reimbursement from your FSA.
Reimbursement From Your FSA
Money in your FSA can be used to reimburse yourself for medical and dental expenses for you, your spouse/partner or eligible dependents.
Manual Claim Submission: You can submit claims yourself for any eligible out-of-pocket expenses and your FSA will reimburse you directly.
FSA Debit Cards: If you have a debit card, you can use this to pay directly for copays or out-of-pocket expenses.
